Across the Telenor family of operations, the awareness of climate change is growing. Pannon is an early starter in the field - and the Hungarian operator's employees are conscious that they can make a difference. Changes in behaviour are evident and by making small changes to their daily routines, staff are saving both carbon and cash. Now Pannon has set ambitious reduction targets for their overall business activities, with a 24% reduction target to be met by 2011.
"This ambitious target is the best reflection of how serious we are in our responsibilities towards our work and natural environment. Such engagement requires the alignment of the entire company and all our stakeholders. Acomplishments has already been made, a lot more is to come. We are ready for the challenge", says Ove Fredheim, CEO of Pannon.
Recycled paper brings environmental gains
Pannon has already shifted to recycled paper and environmentally-friendly plastic and paper bags. For every 1,000 kg of recycled paper the company uses, Pannon saves 17 trees, 4,100 kWh of electricity and 26,500 litres of water. Further, the amount of waste produced is reduced by 27 m3.

Integrating green principles
The Hungarian operator has introduced a number of measures to realign its business along environmentally conscious principles:
Using recycled paper and environmentally-friendly plastic and paper bags
Promoting recycling of mobile phones
Re-using material from old handsets in new products to reduce the quantities of hazardous waste
Using heat probes for heating and cooling of the new facilities
Integrating green principles into its procurement processes
Telenor has a 100 per cent ownership interest in Pannon, the second largest mobile operator in Hungary.
