Telenor and Sun Microsystems in partnership: On-line to develop mobile Internet solutions

“The partnership with Sun has great potential if we succeed with the first common solutions for mobile Internet,” explains Stig M. Herbern, Managing Director of Telenor Mobil. He emphasises that the partnership with the Sun-Netscape Alliance is based on its reputation and leading-edge skills in the Internet and Internet products.

“For its part, Sun has chosen Telenor Mobil as its partner because the company is one of the world’s most advanced and future-oriented mobile operators, also in the area of WAP services,” adds Jørgen Myrland, Managing Director of Sun Microsystems. He explains that the Sun-Netscape Alliance has chosen a limited number of mobile operators in Europe as its strategic partners, and that Telenor Mobil will be a vital partner in the Nordic countries.

The partnership involves close contact between the companies’ product and development teams. The partners will also exchange market and sales experience, in a continual process of improvement of products and services to end-users.

Telenor Mobil’s customers will primarily see the results of the partnership in the spring, at the planned launch of a mobile organiser/calendar with access both from the web and WAP. The calendar will download content and events from the web, and include mobile payment solutions.

Mobile Internet, although in early stage of development at the moment, is a growth sector for the future. Industry estimates state that within three or four years there will be more users accessing the Internet with mobile phones than with PCs.
